Gilpin Earns Southland Offensive Player of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In her new position at outside hitter for the first time, Brittany Gilpin certainly impressed, earning the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Gilpin had 37 kills to lead the Islanders to a 2-1 weekend at the Baylor Invitational. The junior averaged 3.36 kills per set across the three matches and set a career high with 20 kills against UTRGV.

In both the UTRGV and Baylor matches, Gilpin registered double-doubles with 20 kills and 16 digs against the Vaqueros and 11 kills and digs against the Bears.  Her 37 kills were the most in the Southland Conference on opening weekend.

Gilpin moved outside after spending her first two seasons with the Islanders as a middle blocker. In 2015, she was one of the most prolific middles in the Southland, setting the second-highest mark in school history for hitting percentage in a season.

The Islanders along with Gilpin will face a pair of top 20 teams this weekend at the HotelRed Invitational. The Blue and Green open the tournament against No. 18 San Diego before facing host No. 2 Wisconsin on Sunday.
