EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team dropped its Sunday matchup with UNLV 6-0. The Islanders (0-2-0) could not pull out of a 3-0 hole in the first half. The game was called in the 84th minute due to lightning.
UNLV (2-0-0) jumped out to an early lead with goals by Susie Bernal and Michela Morris in the eighth and 23rd minutes, respectively. The Runnin' Rebels added to their lead just before the halftime break with a goal from Brittney Gideon.
A trio of goals by UNLV in the second half put the match out of reach for the Islanders.
Islanders goalkeeper Jordan Wainwright finished the first half with six saves, before rookie Kendall Moody entered the match in the second half to make three saves, the second-most for a freshmen in a debut.
Freshman Madeleine Lozano tallied the lone shot on goal for the Islanders.
The Runnin' Rebels recorded 27 shots, with 15 attempts on goal.
Freshman Ashley Hamilton was named to the all-tournament team as the lone selection for the Islanders.
The Islanders have added a match to the 2016 schedule. A&M-Corpus Christi will travel to Southern Methodist next Sunday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 P.M. for the first meeting in history between the two programs.
The home opener for the Blue and Green has moved to a 7 P.M. kickoff against Houston on Sept. 9. Fans will be able to enjoy the Kickoff Tailgate in conjunction with Waves of Welcome. Previously, the home opener was set to be Sept. 4 versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but that game has been cancelled.
Prior to their matchup with the Mustangs next Sunday, the Islanders head to Denton to face North Texas on Friday at 7 P.M.
