HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team finished the regular season with a 1-0 loss to Houston Baptist on Friday night, snapping a three-game winning streak.
"It was a frustrating way to end the regular season in that we didn't execute our style of soccer," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We got away from what has made us successful. We didn't look to connect passes or take chances.
"HBU scored on a great finish and just had a little more urgency from start to finish. I think when we got the ball on the ground and moved it, we were successful. We told the team post game to keep our heads up and refocus our energy on the tournament, take a positive away from the game and take away from they know that they can control and execute better."
Islanders goalkeeper Megan Delaney was called into action twice in the first five minutes of the match, making saves to keep the game scoreless early.
Houston Baptist scored the lone goal of the match in the ninth minute. Allison Abendschien took a pass from Sabriah Spencer and sent a shot into the top corner.
After four saves by Delaney, the Islanders transitioned to the attack, as Emma Biba sent a shot wide of the goal in the 33rd minute. A&M-Corpus Christi recorded its only shot on goal in the 59th minute. Nanna Poulsen forced Houston Baptist goalkeeper Katie Turner into a diving save.
Delaney reached double-digits in saves for the third time this season with 11. Poulsen led the Islanders offensively with two shots, one on goal. Meghan Cordero, Hailey Sutton and Biba each recorded a shot in the match.
A&M-Corpus Christi will find out its seeding and opponent in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Sunday, following the match between Sam Houston State and the University of the Incarnate Word, a game that was rescheduled twice.
The Islanders clinched their first berth in the Southland Conference Tournament last weekend with wins over Lamar and McNeese State.
