Like Thursday night in College Station, the Islanders struggled putting the ball in the hole early. A&M-Corpus Christi went just 18-of-72 (25.0%) from the floor and went 8-of-28 (28.6%) from beyond the arc against the Longhorns.
"The first thing that comes to mind for me is missed layups," Head Coach Willis Wilson said. "The good news is that we didn't let our offense – or lack thereof at times – affect our defense. I thought our defense was good enough to win tonight."
Unlike Thursday night, junior Rashawn Thomas wasn't hindered by foul trouble. The big man scored nine points on 4-of-9 shooting in the first half. Senior Brandon Pye added two three-pointers to keep the Islanders in striking distance, trailing 37-28 at the break.
The Islanders kept pace with the Longhorns in the second half, getting as close as five points, at 43-38 with 11:19 to play, when senior Bryce Douvier connected on a pair of free throws and sophomore Ehab Amin picked up one of his five steals and scored the uncontested layup.
After a Texas timeout, the Longhorns' Connor Lammert knocked down a three-pointer to prevent the Islanders from getting any closer. They led by as many as 14 before finishing with the 67-56 victory.
DOUVIER LEADS THE WAY AGAIN
• For the second straight game, Douvier led the Islanders in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds.
• Douvier added two assists and one block.
• The forward was able to get to the line, connecting on 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
DEFENSIVE PRESSURE KEEPS ISLANDERS CLOSE
Playing against new Texas Head Coach Shaka Smart, who is also known for his high intensity pressing defense, the Islanders were the the ones forcing turnovers on Saturday. A&M-Corpus Christi turned the Longhorns over 18 times and picked up 10 steals. The Islanders finished with just 14 turnovers and only allowed three steals for the Longhorns.
A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI HIT BOARDS TO MAKE UP FOR POOR SHOOTING
• Although the Islanders were outrebounded 47-42, they won the offensive rebounding battle 22-15.
• A&M-Corpus Christi finished with 21 second chance points to just 15 for the Longhorns.
